Dr. Carola Weil named Vice Provost for International Affairs

Dr. Carola Weil will serve as the University of Minnesota’s next vice provost for international affairs and senior international officer, effective August 24, 2026. Dr. Weil will lead the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance—the University’s central international office—and continue to advance the University as a global leader in international teaching, research, and outreach.

This spring, the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities honored more than 70 students with the President's Student Leadership & Service Award (PSLSA) for exceptional leadership and service to the University and surrounding community. Somali Lullabies Project Preserves Language & Culture, Provides Educational Training Tools

In her Minnesota Somali community, author and educator Marian Hassan has long been a proponent of oral language preservation: She has interviewed Somali grandmothers and led sharing circles to hear the grandmothers’ stories and lullabies. But she was becoming aware of a growing problem: Somali children in Minnesota were rapidly losing their home language, and Somali elders—the keepers of the language and culture—were aging.
