CARLA participates in ACTFL convention
Posted: December 3, 2024CARLA had an active presence at the 2024 ACTFL Convention that took place November 22–24 in Philadelphia. Director Kate Paesani, along with Lauren Goodspeed, Mandy Menke, and Helena Ruf, the co-leaders of CARLA's Social Justice in Language Education initiative, presented two sessions on Friday, November 22. “Students’ Critical Language Awareness in Social Justice Classrooms” had 41 attendees and “Social Justice in LCTL Classrooms: Understanding Teacher Knowledge” had 22 attendees. Ayumi Stockman, a co-leader of the Equity and Access to State Seals of Biliteracy initiative, presented "Seals of Biliteracy: Supporting LCTL Access and Equity” during a research session focused on equity in bilingual education. In addition, CARLA Summer Institute instructors presented four conference sessions. See the full list in the most recent CARLA Update.
Karin Larson staffed the joint Language Resource Center (LRC) booth with colleagues from other LRCs. It is always gratifying to meet educators who are active users of CARLA’s resources, and it is exciting to introduce others to the many resources that CARLA and other LRCs offer to the language education community. Karin also helped coordinate a joint Language Resource Center information session that had over 130 participants. See this list of featured resources that were presented at this session.
In addition to the presentations and booth activities, Kate participated in the ACTFL Board of Directors Meeting that preceded the Convention. Kate and Karin met with the LRC Coordinating Council of directors and assistant/associate directors to discuss issues of common concern, and to plan for LRC collaboration in the coming year.
CARLA looks forward to participating in the 2025 ACTFL Convention in New Orleans.
