Experts have long cited the benefits of internationalization for students, whether through study abroad, interacting with international students, or learning in the classroom. These qualities such as openness and sensitivity to cultural differences, flexibility of thinking, respect for others, and tolerance also provide students a strong foundation for addressing issues of diversity and inclusion. What role can and should internationalization play in advancing social justice? How can universities ensure more equitable approaches to international education?

On November 19, 2020, Associate Vice President and Dean Meredith McQuaid and Tonija Hope, director of the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center at Howard University, discussed a variety of topics, including the importance of including international students in discussions about racism. A panel of UMN thought leaders highlighted work and perspectives on the important intersection of international education and social justice.
