Coming from a society where the belief that women are incapable of excelling in science and math persists, my journey to the University of Minnesota was both ambitious and fraught with challenges. In Pakistan, women are significantly underrepresented in STEM fields, and pursuing education in this area is often seen as an unattainable goal. However, the initiatives at the University of Minnesota aimed at empowering women in STEM inspired me to challenge these societal norms and apply for the PhD program.
Navigating my journey as an international student at the University of Minnesota has been transformative, especially as I balanced the demands of my academic pursuits with the responsibilities of raising my family. As a mother of two, the challenges of managing coursework, research, and family life were substantial. Yet, these challenges enriched my journey, revealing strengths I hadn’t anticipated.
Balancing the rigorous demands of a PhD program with the needs of my children required immense resilience and dedication. Each day brought new challenges—juggling study sessions, attending lectures, and meeting deadlines, all while ensuring that my children received the care and support they needed. This dual role of scholar and parent pushed me to develop a level of efficiency and focus that I had never known before.
Amid these challenges, my commitment to providing a nurturing environment for my children remained unwavering. I was determined to model perseverance and the value of education for them, demonstrating that with determination and hard work, it is possible to achieve one’s goals, even under demanding circumstances. This personal responsibility deepened my resolve to excel in my studies and contribute meaningfully to the field of STEM education.
The intersection of my roles as a parent and a researcher also influenced my academic focus. My experiences underscored the importance of making STEM education more inclusive and accessible. As I explored the potential of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into STEM education, I was driven by the desire to create learning environments that better support diverse learners, including my own children. This goal fueled my passion for ensuring that technological advancements in education benefit all students and help address existing gaps and inequities.
Throughout this journey, I was fortunate to receive invaluable support from my teachers; their understanding and encouragement provided not only academic guidance but also reassurance during moments when balancing motherhood and research felt overwhelming. Their mentorship was crucial in helping me navigate this challenging period and stay focused on my goals.
Reflecting on my time at the University of Minnesota, I realize that the experience has been deeply enriching. It has shaped my professional aspirations and reinforced my commitment to advancing STEM education through innovative solutions like AI. The challenges of managing academic and family responsibilities have only strengthened my determination and resilience, preparing me to make a meaningful impact in my field.
Looking back, my identity as a woman from the Global South, once perceived as a burden, has become a source of strength. I am now dedicated to empowering women in my community, challenging the myths that have held us back for so long, and contributing to a new narrative where women in STEM are not just present but leading.
