Support for Those Impacted by Recent Earthquakes

Posted: February 13, 2023

Dear colleagues,

Last week’s earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have brought unimaginable devastation to the region. We know that people living in the region continue to suffer with aftershocks and the extent of the destruction. People around the world are considering what role they can play in helping those who have been impacted. We know from conversations we’re having with colleagues, and from news we’re reading from around the world, that this experience is traumatic, and we must look for ways to help.

There are many ways to offer support—such as reaching out to individuals in our local community with ties in the region or donating to organizations working directly on relief efforts in Turkey and Syria.

Here at the University of Minnesota, many have been personally impacted by this tragedy, and they will need our care and concern now and in the future. International Student and Scholar Service (ISSS) has reached out to Twin Cities international students and scholars from the region to offer condolences and support. But we know there are others in our community with ties to the region, so we encourage you to reach out to students, faculty, or staff you know who may be impacted. Offering a show of support will mean so much to those who are far from family and friends during this difficult time.

Sincerely,
Meredith McQuaid
Associate Vice President and Dean
