Award for Global Engagement

Anne M. D’Angelo is a passionate advocate for internationalization in higher education. Her extensive experience living and working around the world, in addition to her academic work, has prepared her as a visionary leader and continuous innovator driving the Carlson School of Management’s global initiatives.

Dr. D’Angelo was a major force behind the successful implementation of the cutting-edge international experience requirement at the Carlson School, resulting in the development of new institutional collaborations and the significant increase of students studying abroad from 200 to more than 800 annually. Building on this success, she has established a research agenda to ascertain the impact of education abroad on students, and is leading the development and implementation of a new metrics model to assess global achievements of the University and to extend the model to the Carlson School. She is leading efforts to engage faculty in integrating intercultural learning experiences with disciplinary business topics at home and abroad.

She is a key architect of the global strategy of the Carlson Global Institute (CGI) that builds on the strategies of both the Carlson School and the University, which will advance internationalization efforts over the coming years. She also developed an impressive case statement to support student scholarships that will allow the Carlson Global Institute to be one of the pillars of the Carlson School’s upcoming fundraising campaign.

Dr. D’Angelo is a model in expanding positive relationships across campus and outside the University to enhance the international efforts of the Carlson School. She played a central role in the establishment and recruitment of an external advisory council for CGI, and she has helped expand engagement with the Minnesota Trade Office, businesses, and NGOs. Her ability to reach across industries to create connections is unparalleled.

Her contributions extend beyond the Carlson School as demonstrated by her teaching and mentoring graduate students in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), service on the board of Global Minnesota, strong track record of conference presentations and publications, and professional association roles including Chair Elect of NAFSA’s Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship Knowledge Community. She also received both a U.S. Department of State Meritorious Honor Award and a U.S. Fulbright-Nehru Award to India.

Dr. D’Angelo has provided visionary leadership in helping to make the Carlson School a uniquely global business school and in advancing internationalization research, policy, and practice at the University of Minnesota, nationally, and globally.
