The U.S. Department of State has issued a worldwide caution for U.S. citizens, urging travelers to stay informed and maintain situational awareness.

University Response

The University of Minnesota, through the GPS Alliance International Health, Safety, and Compliance team, has been carefully monitoring the developing events in the Middle East region to assess and prioritize the safety of University travelers. We have been and will continue to be in contact with University travelers in the region to ensure they have appropriate plans and resources.

The University has not restricted travel to any destinations other than Israel, where the restriction has been in place since October 2023. Students traveling to high-risk locations (U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Levels 3 or 4) for University purposes will, as always, require approval from the International Travel Risk Assessment and Advisory Committee (ITRAAC) prior to travel.

Stay Informed

The State Department has several ways to stay informed while traveling:

  • The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is the best way for travelers to receive updated alerts and information from local State Department sources. We urge all University travelers to register for STEP prior (if possible) to any international travel.
  • You are encouraged to join the State Department’s WhatsApp channel for emergency information.

Get Assistance

Travelers who have any concerns for their health, safety, and security while abroad should contact their local partner, local resources, or the University’s emergency phone: 612-301-CALL (2255). This number is monitored 24 hours a day, and emergency calls will be directed to a UMN staff member who can assist you. Travelers who have concerns about their travel in advance of departure from the U.S. should contact the International Health, Safety, and Compliance team at [email protected].

Additionally, stressful situations can lead to anxiety and worry, which are often experienced more acutely while overseas. If you are experiencing non-emergency anxiety issues, we recommend you contact the University's health, wellness, and emergency assistance provider, On Call International
