Dr. Carola Weil named Vice Provost for International Affairs

Dr. Carola Weil will serve as the University of Minnesota’s next vice provost for international affairs and senior international officer, effective August 24, 2026. Dr. Weil will lead the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance—the University’s central international office—and continue to advance the University as a global leader in international teaching, research, and outreach.

“I am excited and honored to join the University of Minnesota at a critical time, building on the exceptionally strong leadership in international education for which it has been known for more than a century,” said Dr. Weil.

For the past eight years, she has served as dean of Continuing Studies at McGill University. During her tenure, she successfully led initiatives that significantly strengthened the global presence of the university, including through collaborative educational and research partnerships with international organizations, universities, and the private sector; and promoted innovative approaches to international education for adult learners and historically underrepresented populations.

A scholar of international relations and public policy, with a focus on humanitarianism, forced migration, gender, and the Global South, she brings a record of institution‑building, successful fundraising, cross-sector partnership development, and a commitment to inclusive excellence and lifelong learning. 

A former international student from Germany, she holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Bryn Mawr College, and postdoctoral fellowships with Harvard University’s JFK School of Government and the University of Southern California.
