International Education Week

November 12-16, 2018

International Education Week is an annual celebration during which University of Minnesota colleges, campuses, and student groups plan events and activities to highlight the University's support of international education.

International Education Week logoAbout International Education Week

International Education Week was first declared by the U.S. Departments of State and Education in 2000 as part of their effort to encourage policies and programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study in the U.S.

This year, colleges and offices are once again planning receptions, seminars, brown bag sessions, and other events to highlight the University's support of international education.

The Global Programs and Strategy Alliance has a leadership role in supporting and publicizing these events. The GPS Alliance will provide limited matching funds to colleges and campuses to support events.

Impact of High School Study on Post-Secondary Foreign Language Proficiency
12:20-1:10 p.m.; University International Center Room 101

This presentation will present results of a research project that investigated the following questions about the impact of high school foreign language study on post-secondary language proficiency: (1) To what extent does exposure to formal language learning at the secondary level affect language proficiency at the post-secondary level? (2) Are there differences among students at the same stage in the second-language program that can be attributed to pre-university experience with the language? The study is based on language proficiency tests of over 2,300 students at the University of Minnesota. Presenters will discuss what the results say about language offerings at the high school level and curricular emphases at the post-secondary level. Open to faculty, staff, and students interested in language teaching and learning. More information >>
