Travel helps expand Sámi programming at UMD

The Kathryn A. Martin Library at the University of Minnesota Duluth has one of the largest Sámi collections in the world, with thousands of books, films, and other items related to the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia. Library Director Matt Rosendahl recently traveled to Sápmi, the traditional lands of the Sámi people, to visit cultural centers, museums, and libraries and meet with people working to preserve Sámi language and culture.

UMN scholars receive Fulbright awards for 2023-24

Several UMN faculty and professionals have been selected as 2023-24 Fulbright U.S. Scholars. Fulbright Scholar Awards are prestigious fellowships that provide opportunities to teach and research abroad while creating relationships between people and nations. The program sends U.S. scholars and professionals to approximately 130 countries, where they lecture and/or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

UMN Receives Language Resource Center Funding from U.S. Department of Education

The University of Minnesota’s Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) has received its eighth round of funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI Language Resource Centers (LRC) program, totaling more than $750,000 over the next four years.

The purpose of the competitive Title VI LRC grant program is to establish, strengthen and operate centers to improve the nation’s capacity for teaching foreign languages.

CARLA is one of only 16 centers in the country funded by the prestigious program.
