New provider for international medical insurance and emergency support

Posted: October 16, 2023

As of October 15, the University of Minnesota has a new provider—On Call International—for international medical insurance and emergency support services for University-purpose travel outside the U.S. As a result, there are several significant changes and exciting upgrades that University travelers should be aware of.

Accessing Assistance and Services

If a University traveler needs any sort of assistance while abroad, the first contact should be to On Call International. They can help with medical assistance, natural or political disasters, travel assistance, claims support, and many other issues. Read more about the policy coverage and assistance provided.

Travelers can contact On Call International through a variety of ways:

  • Global 24/7 help line: +1 978-651-9224
  • Call toll-free from the U.S. or Canada: 1-833-808-0254
  • 24/7 live chat: oncallinternational.com/chat/direct
  • Text-only number: +1 844-302-5131
  • Email: mail@oncallinternational.com

Blanket Coverage for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff will no longer be asked to opt-in and provide payment for international medical and emergency support services coverage, as fees are now covered centrally for all faculty and staff University-purpose travel. Faculty and staff travelers should use the services of On Call International when traveling internationally for University purposes. Redpoint coverage, provided through employee benefits, should be used for personal international travel and University-purpose domestic travel more than 100 miles away from home.

Register Your Travel to Obtain Coverage

In order to ensure insurance coverage, all faculty, staff, and student travelers must register each individual trip through the University’s International Travel Registry, as required by policy. Registering international travel will ensure that On Call International has the information it needs to support a traveler while abroad.

New Coverage Option for Guests and Inbound Scholars

Another new feature of the coverage through On Call International is the ability to provide insurance for guests traveling on University business, as well as incoming international visitors. Hosting departments are required to register travel on behalf of these travelers and pay for coverage using an EFS account. Learn more about the Guest Process for obtaining insurance.
