Guide to Hosting International Visitors

Introduction

This reference is designed to guide faculty, administrators, and staff in arranging for a short visit of an international guest or delegation to the University of Minnesota. It contains tips on planning and scheduling a visit, advice on purchasing gifts, general cross-cultural issues, specific protocol considerations, and information about University resources. Some of the resources are specific to the Twin Cities campus, but most of the information in this guide will be helpful to those on all campuses.

If you need to make the many arrangements for the visit of an international guest, it can seem like a daunting challenge. Do your best, but realize that it is not your responsibility to anticipate all of your visitor’s needs. You simply want to make sure the visitor is comfortable and can accomplish the goals of the visit. And remember, visitors from other countries also want to learn U.S. customs while they are here and do not expect you to make everything just as it is in their country.

For more information on institutional linkages that may result from the visit, please refer to Guidelines for Establishing a Partnership.
